How to Make a Hopscotch Rug

Hopscotch, a game beloved by children of all ages, originated during the early Roman Empire as a way to train soldiers. Foot soldier ran the 100-foot course in full armor to prepare to combat. Eventually children began designing their own small hopscotch courses by drawing boxes and lines in the dirt. A custom hopscotch board is perfect for playing indoors on a rainy day. Modern hopscotch boards can be made inexpensively at home with a few select tools. Involve your children in the creation of their own board for a project that will keep them interested for hours.

    • 1

Purchase a long runner rug that is at least 10 feet long.

    • 2

Divide your rug into seven even rows using your measuring tape. Use thing masking tap as dividers between each row.

    • 3

Divide every other row in half. Place masking tape on the length of each row that is divided in half. You should have three double rows and four solid rows.

    • 4

Paint the inside of each individual square using fabric paint and a paint brush. Let it dry.

    • 5

Place a number stencil in each box starting with the number one at the beginning of the rug. Each box will have a different number in numerical order. Leave the last box empty to act as "Home."

    • 6

Paint the stencil numbers onto the rug in a dabbing motion using the sponge brushes. Let it dry.

    • 7

Slowly remove all pieces of masking tape from hopscotch board. Let the rug dry over night before playing.
