How to Make Your Own Hieroglyphics

The act of expressing thoughts and words through pictures is as old as civilization itself. From the famous cave paintings of our earliest ancestors to the fascinating hieroglyphics carved in ancient Egyptian tombs, people have used pictures to convey and represent things for thousands of years. It's easy to make your own hieroglyphics with a set of simple pictures and a legend or key. Keep your hieroglyphic translations a secret to maintain privacy or share them with a few friends to establish your own private correspondence code.

  Write each letter of the alphabet down on a piece of paper, leaving at least 3 inches of space around each letter.

  Think of a simple icon, picture or image to assign to each letter. Fruit, animals, kitchenware, geometric shapes and line patterns are a few simple ideas.

  Draw each hieroglyph underneath each letter, assigning a picture for all letters from "A" to "Z." This will be your hieroglyph legend for encrypting and decoding messages.

  Use your hieroglyphics to write a secret message to a friend or to code a private diary entry and prevent prying eyes from reading.
