Memory Activities
Print pictures of different vegetables on small slips of paper; print two pictures of each vegetable to be placed on different cards. To make the cards more durable, laminate each one before play. Place the matching cards face down on a table and have the children play a game of memory. For another memory activity, place several plastic vegetables on a tray and have the children look at each one. Have the children close their eyes and remove one vegetable. When the children open their eyes, see who can name the missing vegetable.
Coloring Activities
For a simple activity, print vegetable coloring pages from the Internet. Have each child select one page to color using crayons, markers or paint. For added decoration, have the children paint a thin layer of glue over their pictures. If the picture is of a carrot, sprinkle it with orange glitter or green glitter for a cucumber. You can also have each student draw and color a still life using vegetables in a bowl or on a plate or a tray.
Sense Activities
Test the touch and smell senses of your pre-K class using vegetables. Have all the children feel the different textures and shapes of vegetables. Blindfold the children and hand them one vegetable at a time. They must feel the vegetable and try to guess the vegetable. Alternatively, have the children smell the vegetables and try to guess the correct one. For added fun, allow the children to taste the different types of vegetables cooked and uncooked.
Painting Activities
Prekindergartners can use vegetables as stamps. Cut vegetables like potatoes, carrots, green peppers and okra in half. Press the vegetable on napkins to drain the juice and remove any seeds. Have them dip the vegetables into paint and press onto paper to create designs. Create a contest by awarding prizes to the best, funniest, most creative and scariest vegetable paintings.
