PE Activities for Grade School Children

Physical education classes offer many health benefits for school-age children. PE class activities teach young children how to work together, build bonds, obey rules and stay physically fit, which leads to a healthy lifestyle. Plan some entertaining indoor and outdoor games for the children to participate in and they will be asking to play them repeatedly.
  1. Races

    • Mark a starting line and finish line 25 feet apart to prepare some races for your students. The students must line up at the starting line and race to the finish line. Other race ideas include hopping, running backwards, skipping and sack races. You can also create relay races instead of having the children race individually. Divide the children into two teams and have them line up at the start. Each player from each team must race to the finish and back to tag the next player in his team line. The first team to finish the game wins the race.

    Sport Games

    • Prepare a baseball game, soccer game or game of volleyball. Play the games using typical rules or give them a wacky twist. For example, make a game of wacky baseball by duct taping a large beach towel to a bat and using an inflatable beach ball instead of a baseball. Have the children play crab walk soccer with their bottoms facing the ground on all fours. Prepare a game of water-balloon volleyball with water balloons and beach towels. The children must toss and catch the water balloons with beach towels.

    Hoop Games

    • Give the children hula hoops and have them practice. Have a competition to see how long each player can hula hoop. If you do not have enough hoops for everyone, simply time each player. Other hoop contests include who can hula hoop with the most hoops and who can do the best trick. You can also hang hula hoops from a tree or clothesline and have the children try to toss balls, such as footballs, through the hoops. Teach the children how to "jump rope" with a hoop by holding the hoop in front of them and swinging it around their body.

    Beanbag Games

    • Beanbags are available on physical education-supply websites and at many craft stores. See who can balance or juggle the most beanbags. The children must stack the beanbags on their head directly on top of one another. Place several hoops on the ground and have the children try to toss the beanbags into the hoops. You can also cut holes out of a piece of plywood and lean it up against a wall. Kids must try to toss the beanbags into the holes.
