Make the Rattles
Lay the two pieces of felt on top of each other. Trace around the cookie cutter of your choice with the black marker. The rattle will be in the shape of the cookie cutter.
Cut through both pieces of felt to make identical shapes. These serve as the front and back of the rattle.
Sew the bells to one side of one of the felt pieces. Each bell has a loop at the top for attachment; sew through the loop to attach the bell to the felt. Sew each bell separately and tie it off in the back of the felt to secure the bell to the fabric if the baby should happen to get the rattle open.
Lay the felt shapes together with the bells on the inside. Sew around the edge of the felt, using tight stitches, to form the rattle. Leave about an inch of the edge open to form a hole for stuffing the rattle.
Stuff a small amount of pillow stuffing into the hole to pad the rattle and muffle the bells a bit. Finish by stitching the hole and tying off the thread.
Draw a face, using the black marker, on one side of the rattle. This will create added enjoyment for the child. Repeat this process to make four rattles.
Hang the Rattle Game
Snip a slit in the top of each rattle using scissors. Make sure there is at least an inch of felt left above the slit to allow for the baby to pull on the rattles and not tear them off the ribbon.
Thread each rattle onto a piece of ribbon about two feet long.
Tie the rattle ribbon to the crib on one side, thread the ribbon through the crib bars and tie it on the outside of the crib. Secure the ribbon with a double overhand knot to ensure the baby can't pull it apart. Cut off excess ribbon to prevent a choking hazard. The rattles should be on the inside of the crib, close to the mattress, with the knot on the outside.
Show the baby how to kick and bat at the rattles to make sound. This will become a favorite game for the baby in her crib.
