The Best Leapster Games for Ages 6 to 8

Learning can indeed be fun. The Leapster game system has developed a variety of games to teach skills, such as reading and math, to students using their favorite characters. When finding a game for six- to eight-year-olds, the key is choosing one that will entertain while it teaches. Characters from their favorite shows ranging from Dora to aliens help teach these skills. To keep the game from getting too repetitive, some Leapster games offer rewards that allow children to customize their characters.
  1. Star Wars Themed

    • The "Star Wars"-themed games use popular characters, such as Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Obi-wan Kenobi, to teach children about math and reading skills. The two games have similar titles. They are called "Star Wars Jedi Reading" and "Star Wars Jedi Math." In these games, players control the characters on the good side of the force and defeat the "dark side" by spelling and completing basic arithmetic computations.

    Dora and Diego

    • If your child is a fan of the television characters, Dora The Explorer and Diego, from "Go, Diego, Go!," they will love learning with their favorite characters. Dora and Diego make appearances in "Dora The Explorer Wildlife Rescue" and "Go, Diego, Go!." In the "Dora" version, students learn to spell and recognize patterns as they help Dora complete missions following paths provided by the character "the Map" from the show. In the "Diego" game, your child will save various animals by completing addition and subtraction problems.

    Racing Games

    • The popular "Cars" series of movies has games out for the Leapster. Your children take the role of the hero, Lightning McQueen to complete races. "Cars Supercharged" improves your child's spelling skills. As a reward, the child gets to customize his car when he receives rewards for completing races. These customizations include choosing different colors, new tires and turbo boosts that make his car go faster in the races to help his favorite character win. This customization option combines the educational part of the game with encouraging creative customization choices by your child.

    Princess Games

    • Leapster provides a variety of different games to help princess fans learn to read and complete math computations. Both Ariel and Belle are in the "Disney Princess 2 Worlds of Enchantment" game, and your daughter collects rings to customize her characters throughout the game. With the rings, she can purchase new dresses and jewelry. While there is nothing to collect in "The Princess and the Frog," players learn to spell, add and subtract as they complete a mission changing their characters, Tiana and Prince Naveen, from frogs into people. At the end of the game, they become human and get married, marking completion of the game.
