Western Themed Games for Toddlers

Many young children find cowboys and outlaws intriguing, so it may not come as any surprise when your toddler wants a western-themed birthday party. Since most toddlers have a short attention span and high amount of energy, you should plan quick and easy games for them to play. Awarding the toddlers with western-themed stickers and party favors will encourage game play.
  1. Tossing Games

    • Create basic tossing games for the toddlers using a few supplies and beanbags. Tape a poster of a horse to the bottom of a cardboard box and cut out the mouth. Lean the box against a wall and allow the toddlers to try to toss beanbags into the horse's mouth. For a variation, use a picture of a cow or donkey. Another idea is to place cowboy hats upside down on the ground and let the toddlers try to toss plastic cowboys or western-themed party favors into the hats.

    Classic Games

    • Many toddlers will enjoy some easy classic games with a twist. For example, instead of "Pin the Tail on the Donkey," play a game of "Pin the Lasso in the Cowboy's Hand" or "Pin the Cowboy Hat on the Cowboy." For another classic game twist, play "Hot Cowboy Hat" instead of "Hot Potato." The toddlers must put the hat on before passing it to the next player. The last player remaining wins the cowboy hat to take home as a memento of the party.

    Hunt Games

    • Have the toddlers find their own party favors by hiding them all over the party area. Hide western-themed party favors, such as sheriff badges, inflatable guitars, toy horses, toy handcuffs, water pistols and western temporary tattoos. Give each toddler a western-themed favor bag to hunt for the items. The toddlers can take all the items they find home and you can award a special prize to the toddler who finds the most party favors. For an added bonus, mark a star on two of the party favors and award special prizes to the players who find those prizes.

    Relay Races

    • Allow the toddlers a chance to burn off some energy with relay races. Divide the toddlers into two teams and have them line up at a starting line. Mark a run-to line 20 feet from the starting line and give the first player on each team line a cowboy hat, boots and vest. When you say "Race," the first player in each team line must put on the items, race to the run-to line and back to hand the items to the next player in line. The next toddler in line must do the same thing. The first team to finish the race wins the game. For another relay race, give the toddlers water guns and have them race to see who can shoot 10 empty sodas can off a ledge first.
