Preschool Ideas With Numbers & Colors

Teach your preschoolers about colors and numbers with a few ideas for your classroom. Color and number activities, such as games and crafts, will teach the young children through hands-on practice, visual aid and repetition. Awarding the preschoolers with stickers, crayons and coloring books will encourage them to try their best when participating in the activities.
  1. Easy Ideas

    • Start your preschoolers with a few easy activities for learning numbers and colors. Print number coloring pages from the Internet and have the children color the pictures with certain colors. This will teach the young children colors and numbers at the same time. Other easy activities include printing or purchasing number and color flash cards. Hold the cards up one at a time and ask the preschoolers to guess the number or color on the card. Award small prizes for correct answers to encourage participation.

    Craft Ideas

    • Most preschoolers enjoy playing with Play-Doh, so give each child a tub of Play-Doh to use. Have the preschoolers create numbers using the Play-Doh. Place several tubs in front of the preschoolers and call out a color. They must hold up the correct color. Other items the children can use to create numbers include chenille stems, craft pompoms and blocks. The children can sort the items by color or use the items to create a certain number.

    Game Ideas

    • Children can also play games to help them learn numbers and colors. Place several pieces of construction paper on the ground and play music. When the music stops, have the preschoolers stand on a piece of paper. Call out a color, and the preschooler standing on that color wins a small prize. Do the same thing by writing numbers on the sheets of paper and calling out a number. For another quick game, give the children a bowl of beads and have them sort the beads by number or color.

    Memory Ideas

    • Print colors or numbers on small slips of paper and place them face down on a table. Tell the preschoolers they must try to find a pair. If they find a matching pair of colors or numbers, they can keep the pair and go again. The child who finds the most pairs wins the game. For another memory game, tape a few color flashcards to a board. Have each child close her eyes and remove one card. The first child to tell you the color that is missing wins a small prize. You can also do this with numbers instead of colors.
