Pre-designed Towns
Lego (lego.com) offers many pre-designed boxed town sets that coordinate with the Lego people, vehicles and boats also available for purchase. Some pre-boxed designs of towns include outer-space, western, marina and winter bakery themes. When purchasing boxed sets, the design plans and special blocks needed for that particular blueprint are included. Additional replacement pieces can also be purchased directly from the Lego website, toy stores or from Lego block suppliers.
Themes
Other town ideas replicate fictional towns and themes such as Harry Potter's Diagon Alley is also available from Lego. Additional non-trademarked designs are gas stations and town hall constructions that can be used to create businesses that most towns have within them. Because these designs are also sold in boxed sets, they include directions. However, these basic designs can also be a pattern to recreate generic buildings such as store fronts and malls.
Historical and Modern Settings
While Lego makes some designs in pre-packed boxed sets, you can also purchase patterns over the Internet with instructions on how to put them together. Additional settings include historical themes and landmarks such as medieval castles and Victorian homes. Along with historic town designs, pattern suppliers such as Lions Gate Models (lionsgatemodels.com) sell unique decorative constructions such as fountains and market stalls. Additional building patterns include hospitals, factories and apartment buildings.
Considerations
Because the basic shape and size of the standard Lego has not changed since they were first conceived, Lego towns that are similar in theme but purchased years apart are still compatible. Some original ideas can also be created such as replicating a town that you have been to personally or lived in. Other historical town ideas are far away places such the unique buildings of Tokyo or Paris as well as monuments like the capital building in Washington D.C.
