Real Games
Children can play real sport games outside at a sports-themed party. Simply place bases on the ground for baseball or kickball, goals for soccer and a net for volleyball. Divide the players into teams and award small prizes to the winning teams. For added fun, allow the children to play the games with balloons instead of real balls or use water-filled balloons and beach towels to play volleyball. The children can use the beach towels to catch and toss the balloons over the net to score points.
Contests
Have contests to see who can do a certain sport like hula-hoop the longest. Give each player a hoop to practice. Award a prize to the player who hula-hoops the longest amount of time. If you do not have enough hoops for all of the players, time each player. For another contest, have the players see who can jump rope the longest. Award a new jump rope to the player who jumps rope the longest without messing up. You can also have trick contests by allowing the children to do tricks using the hoops and jump ropes. Award prizes for the best, most creative and funniest tricks.
Classic Games
Put a spin on classic games like "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" with games like "Pin the Pitcher on the Mound" or "Pin the Football Player on the Fields. Other suggestions include classic games like "Hot Potato" and "Musical Chairs." For "Hot Potato" you can try "Hot Football," "Hot Basketball" or "Hot Volleyball." Instead of "Musical Chairs" play "Musical Sports Balls" by placing several balls on the ground (one less than you have players). When the music stops, the children must grab a sports ball. The player left without a ball is out of the game. Remove a ball and keep playing. The last player to grab a sports ball wins a prize.
Tossing Games
Play tossing games using sports balls and sports-themed items. For example, hang hula hoops from a tree or clothesline. Ask the kids to toss footballs, basketballs and baseballs through the hoops. Another idea for a baseball-type game is to cut a baseball diamond shape out of plywood and cut a hole at all the corners. Players can try to toss baseball-themed beanbags into the holes. You can also place a basketball goal out and have the children toss basketballs into the goal. The player who makes the most basketball goals wins a prize.
