Costume Games for Kids

Costumes allow kids to use their imaginations as they become different characters. As such, costume games are effective for stimulating children's creativity and encouraging pretend play. Whether you have costumes laying around the house or just want to put together random articles of clothing to use for dress-up, think of different games that incorporate costumes for kids to enjoy.
  1. Dressing the Part

    • Teach kids about different professions, such as doctors, businessmen and construction workers, and let them dress the part by picking out and wearing costumes that resemble the professions. A child pretending to be a surgeon might wear hospital scrubs, while another child pretending to be a businessman might accessorize with props like a tie and a briefcase. Allow the kids to develop their characters and act out scenes in which the different characters interact with one another. Some kids might even create fictitious names for themselves.

    Halloween Costume Contest

    • A seasonal and festive game to play with kids is to hold a Halloween costume contest. For the contest, each contender is required to show off the costume to enter the competition. Then the voting begins for categories such as Funniest Costume, Most Creative, Grossest and Best Overall Costume. For additional entertainment in this game, have the kids show off a talent as they would in a pageant. You might find that you have a singing pirate or a piano-playing zombie on your hands.

    The Human Zoo

    • Educate kids about zoo animals through a costume game. Have animal masks ready for children to wear, such as tigers, elephants, zebras, monkeys, parrots and giraffes. The kids get to wear a mask of their choice and then must act out the animal once the mask is on. Encourage children to make sounds that the animals make, and to walk around like the animals do. This pretend play activity stimulates creativity and imagination about the animal kingdom. To add to the ambiance, play a soundtrack of jungle sounds or songs.

    Boss of the House

    • Boss of the house is a role reversal game in which kids get to dress up like their mommy or daddy, and boss them around for the duration of the game. The goal of the game is for kids to get a sense of what it's like to be in charge, and all of the things that you have to do as an adult. For this game, kids can rummage through their parents' closets and find clothes that are suitable for a costume.
