First Meeting Activities for Brownie Girl Scouts

The Girl Scouts of America promote building confidence and character through community involvement. Brownies are Girl Scouts usually in grades two to three who participate in fun weekly activities that build friendship and keep the young girls involved in their local community. Plan a few icebreaker activities for the girls when they meet each other at their first Girl Scout troop meeting.
  1. Arrival Activities

    • As soon as each girl arrives, give her a name tag and have her write her name on it. Tell the girls to walk around the room introducing themselves to all the other girls in her troop. Assign two or three girls a project like hanging up a poster with the Girl Scout Law or Promise on it. The girls will work together to complete the project while getting to know one another. Other projects include having the girls setup chairs and tables. You can also place puzzles around the room and the girls can work together doing them until all the Brownies arrive.

    String Activities

    • Cut several pieces of yarn in different lengths (two of each length). Hide the pieces of yarn all over the meeting room. Once all the girls arrive to the meeting, have them search for one piece of yarn. The girls must find the other girl with the matching piece of yarn. They must talk for two minutes, exchanging names and interesting facts about one another. After two minutes, collect all the yarn pieces and hide them again. Keep playing until the girls have a chance to meet everyone in their new Girl Scout troop.

    Name Games

    • Help the girls learn each other's names with an activity. Tell the girls to sit in a circle and select one girl to go first. She must say her name and a food item she likes with the same letter as the first letter in her name. For example, she could say "My name is Lacey and I like lemon pie." The next girl would say "My name is Ashley and I like apples, and Lacey likes lemon pie." Each girl must add her name and a food items she likes, as well as repeat the names and food items of the other girls. The other girls can help a player if she cannot remember a name or food item so everyone will learn each other's names and food they enjoy.

    Lineup Games

    • Have the girls learn about each other by playing a lineup game. Tell the girls to lineup in order by first name. This is a good way for the girls to learn each other's names. Other ideas include having them lineup by birthdays, age, shoe size and hair length. Divide the girls into two teams and see who can get in the correct order the fastest.
