How to Make a Witch's Broom Out of Cat's Cradle

Cat's Cradle is the modern version of string shape games that people have played for centuries. Make a loop of string and hold it between the fingers of both hands in a certain way. Weave your fingers in and out of the loop at designated places and you can create the shape of many different objects. One of the most common shapes is one called, among other things, the witch's broom. You'll end up with multiple strands in one hand and only one strand in the other, illustrating the basic outline of a broom.

Things You'll Need

  • String or cording, 48 inches long

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the ends of the string together in a secure square knot to create a large string loop.

    • 2

Hold each end of the loop in one hand by threading your thumb and pinky through the center of the circle. Pull your hands apart to hold the loop taut.

    • 3

Push your right middle finger underneath the string that lays across your left palm. Push the finger up to catch the string on the back of your finger. Pull your hands apart, bringing the new loop on your right middle finger along with it.

    • 4

Push your right middle finger underneath both strands that you just pulled forward. Twist the finger up and then back around the string. Wrap the two strands around the middle finger three times by twisting the finger in the strands. Pull your hands apart again to make the string taut.

    • 5

Push your left middle finger up through the loop that lays on your right palm. Pull your hands apart again.

    • 6

Turn your hands so that your right hand is above your left hand. Allow the loops from your right thumb and pinky to slip off. Pull your hands apart. You now have a witch's broom, with the handle at the top and the broom straws at the bottom.
