How to Make a Hopscotch

Hopscotch is a nostalgic outdoor game that can be simply drawn with chalk on a sidewalk or hard macadam surface. The Romans are credited with spreading the game across Europe. They had a 100 foot long version that soldiers played to test their speed and strength while carrying heavy loads. Today, kids and adults both enjoy a quick hop, skip and a jump every now and then. This recreational pastime can also be painted indoors, as a decorating accent.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location that is flat and free of debris. If outside, locate it away from traffic.

    • 2

Use a straight edge to draw a 15-inch square.

    • 3

Make a pattern that begins with three of these 15-inch squares in a row. Label the middle of each square, the first with numeral 1, the second with 2 and then 3 in the last.

    • 4

Center two similar squares over this row and designate the left with 4 and 5 in the one next to it.

    • 5

Draw another single square, centered over this set, and identify it as number 6.

    • 6

Position two more side-by-side squares, with the numbers 7 and 8 specified in their centers, over the single one.

    • 7

Draw a single, large rectangle across the top of squares 7 and 8 and label it Home.
