Games for Toddlers to Learn Letters

Toddlers are already familiar with letters through typical activities like singing the alphabet song and reading bedtime stories. Learning letters is just a matter of recognition and repetition. Alphabet letter games are a fun way to remind toddlers what letters are and what sound they represent.
  1. Letter Match

    • Create two sets of letter cards and place them in front of the child in sets of four or five at a time. Ask them to match pairs of letters by turning them over one at a time in a game of memory. This game can be adapted to match capital letters with lowercase letters, block letters and cursive letters and letters with an object that starts with the letter.

    Flash Card

    • Cut out 4 by 6 inch pieces of construction paper. Write each letter of the alphabet on one side of the paper. Have children draw something that starts with the corresponding letter on the back of each piece of paper. Practice the letters by showing the child the letter and then the design on the back of the card.

    Letter Bingo

    • Create a bingo card by writing the alphabet on a piece of paper, leaving space between the letters. Using foam alphabet letters or alphabet magnets, have children match the letters to the bingo sheet. Put the alphabet pieces in a bag or box and have them draw the letters one by one and place them on the bingo sheet. Ask them to name three things that start with the letter.

    Letter Play Dough

    • Draw a letter on a piece of paper so that it fills most of the space. Using play dough, ask the children to roll the dough and make a dough letter. They should place pieces of the dough on top of the letter until the letter is completely formed with dough. You can also use M&M candies, pieces of yarn or strips of crepe or tissue paper to trace the letter.
