Firework Activities for Children

When planning a Fourth of July party or lesson plan for school, create a few games and crafts to teach the children about fireworks. Activities will keep the children busy, prevent boredom and help them build fine motor skills. Children will enjoy using their creativity and imagination making fireworks crafts and participating in fireworks-themed games.
  1. Paper Crafts

    • Children can make a sheet of glittering fireworks using water, sugar, black construction paper, colored chalk and a small container, according to The Idea Box website. Fill the small container with warm water and add sugar until it dissolves. Dip chalk in the sugar water and draw lines that resemble fireworks on the sheet of paper. The sugar will crystallize again once the chalk dries, which will add a sparkling effect to the firework art. For an easier version, have the children draw firework bursts with white glue on black construction paper. Sprinkle the glue with glitter and shake off excess glitter.

    Circle Games

    • Make a firecracker using construction paper and an empty paper towel roll. Have the children sit in a circle and hand one child the "firecracker." Play music and tell the children to pass the firecracker around the circle. The child holding the firecracker when the music stops is out of the game. Eliminate one player each round and the last player remaining in the game wins. For another circle game, print several pictures of firework bursts and write a number on each one. Write the same numbers on slips of paper and place the numbers in a cup. Play music and tell the children to walk around the firework bursts. When the music stops, they must stand on a firework burst. Draw a number from the cup and the child standing on that number wins a prize.

    Cotton Swab Crafts

    • Give the children a bowl of cotton swabs and a sheet of construction paper. Have them cut the ends of the cotton swabs off in different lengths and dip into colored water made with food coloring. This will dye the cotton swabs in different colors. The children can arrange the cotton swabs in a circular pattern on black construction paper to create firework bursts. They can also just use cotton swabs to dip in paint and draw firework bursts on white sheets of paper.

    Educational Games

    • Create a few educational games using fireworks such as a game of memory. Print pictures of firework bursts and firecrackers in different colors (two of each picture). Place the pictures face down and have the children play a game of memory. The child who finds the most matches wins the game. Another idea is color sorting with the firework bursts. Mix up several firework burst pictures and have the children sort the pictures by colors.
