Fun Night Games for High Schoolers

Gather a group of your friends to take advantage of the warm summer nights and play outside games. The night transforms ordinary, simple games into extraordinary fun simply because of the dark atmosphere. Some games require a little light to see, so grab a few glow sticks and flashlights before heading out. In addition, do not forget to spray yourself with insect repellent to keep away the bugs away.
  1. Ghost in the Graveyard

    • Sure, the name sounds spooky but the game really is not played in a graveyard, nor does it involve ghosts. Pick an area that is extremely dark and offers an assortment of trees and rocks to hide behind. Designate a home base and choose one player to be "it." The "it" player must stand at home base, close his eyes and count to an agreed-upon number such as 10 or 20. While "it" is counting, the other players must run and hide. Once "it" opens his eyes, he must search around for the players and tag them before they run to home base. The last player to reach home base, or the tagged player, becomes the next "it."

    Night Scavenger Hunt

    • Ask a parent to set up a scavenger hunt for you and your friends. Scavenger hunts are hunts for specific items. Tell parents that the list must contain items that you can find inside a house. Separate kids into teams, gather your lists and determine if flashlights are allowed or not. Have a parent set a timer and run to see which team gathers the most items on its list in the shortest amount of time.

    Flashlight Tag

    • Play your own version of laser tag with color-coded flashlights. This game works best with a large group of kids separated into two teams. Gather flashlights in a specific color, or switch out light bulbs so everyone on the same team has the same color of light. Decide where the boundaries of the game will be so everyone is in the same area. The area should have places to hide behind for protection. Send players off to hide for 1 minute. The object of the game is tag opposite teams with your flashlight to tag them out. They must sit on the sidelines until the next game starts and the last one standing is the winner.

Glow in the Dark Freeze Tag

    • Send a group of teenagers to a large, open field with a variety of glow-in-the-dark necklaces. Give each player one necklace to wear so she can easily be spotted by the tagger. Designate a tagger and give her three necklaces to wear so the player can easily identify her from everyone else. To make the game more challenging, do not give the tagger any necklaces so players have to be on high alert to avoid getting tagged. Send the tagger away from the area to count to 10. Once she finishes counting, she runs or sneaks up on the players to try to tag them. If she is successful, the tagged players must remain in a frozen position until another player un-tags them.
