How to Play Captain Midnight in the Pool

As the summer months linger on and the children are home from school, you may find yourself in need of a fun activity for a group of kids to pass the time. One such game that doesn't require any materials or preparation is Captain Midnight, in which a designated individual attempts to lure the rest of the group close enough to tag, but avoid being tagged himself. If you have a swimming pool at your house, it can be played in the water as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Designate one individual to be "Captain Midnight." He stands at one end of the pool with his back to the rest of the group, which is positioned at the opposite end of the pool.

    • 2

Instruct the rest of the group to say in unison, "Captain Midnight, what time is it?" The individual who is Captain Midnight can say any hour from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. The rest of the group must then take that many steps toward Captain Midnight. If someone tags Captain Midnight, she becomes the new Captain Midnight and everyone else returns to the group end of the pool.

    • 3

Instruct the individual who is Captain Midnight that at any time, he can shout out "Midnight" when he is asked what time it is. When this happens, the rest of the group must swim back to the other end of the pool as Captain Midnight turns and chases them. Anyone tagged by Captain Midnight becomes his assistant to aid in the tagging of others. Anyone who reaches the opposite side of the pool without being tagged is safe, and Captain Midnight returns to his end of the pool.

    • 4

Assign a new Captain Midnight at random if everyone in the group is tagged by Captain Midnight and/or her assistants without Captain Midnight being tagged.
