How to Make Pencil Mazes

Mazes come in many shapes and sizes, but no style of maze is more basic than a hand-drawn maze on a piece of paper. Drawing in pencil allows you to make changes to your maze as you design it, then to ink over the pencil if desired to make a permanent border for the maze. Creating your own maze is a fun way to make a maze with complete control over both the theme of the maze and the difficulty.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the outline that the maze will be included within.

    • 2

Draw a path from the starting point, then split the path into two or more routes.

    • 3

Expand all the branches from the first split.

    • 4

Split each branch of the path into more pathways.

    • 5

Complete the correct path, being sure there is a way to progress from the start to the exit.

    • 6

Fill in the remainder of the space of the outline so that the correct path can not be easily identified.

    • 7

Cover over the lines with ink, if desired, to make the maze permanent.
