Easy Activities

• Print coloring pages of fires and firefighters for the children to color. Give the children a selection of crayons, markers and paint to decorate their pictures. Make the fires sparkle by adding a thin layer of glue over any fire in the picture. Sprinkle red, orange and yellow glitter on top of the glue. Shake off any excess glitter and the fire will sparkle. For another easy activity, talk to your local fire department about having a firefighter come to the party or class. He can show the children his uniform and talk about what he does as a fireman.

Relay Races

• Mark a starting line and finish line 25 feet apart. Divide the players into two teams and have them line up at the starting line. Give the first player in each team a child-size firefighter costume. When you say, "Go," the players must put on the outfits, run to the finish line and run back to the starting line. They must hand the costumes off to the next player in line, who must do the same thing. The first team to finish the race wins the game. For added excitement, have each child carry a bucket of water as he runs to the finish line and back.

Fire Truck Crafts

• Give each child a shoe box to make her own fire truck. Supplies the children can use to decorate their fire trucks include construction paper, stickers, markers, paint, glue, scissors and tape. You can also have the children create fire truck pictures using sponges. Let the children dip fire truck-shaped sponges into paint and press them on sheets of construction paper. Other firefighter-themed sponges like fire hydrants, fireman badges and fireman hats are available too.

Circle Games

• Ask the children to sit in a circle and hand one child a plush firefighter toy. Play some music and tell the children to pass the firefighter around the circle. When the music stops playing, the child holding the firefighter is out of the game. Start the music again and eliminate one player each round. The last player left in the game wins the toy firefighter. You can also use a fire truck instead of a firefighter. For added enjoyment, ask each child to say why he would or wouldn't want to be a fireman, before the game starts.
