Relay Races
Mark a starting line and finish line 30 feet apart. Create a variety of relay races such as a sack race using burlap sacks, a three-legged race by tying each pair's inner legs together, running races and running backwards races. For another type of relay race, divide the kids into two teams. Place a table at the finish line with a jar of petroleum jelly and a bowl of cotton balls. When you "Go," the first player in each team line must race to the finish line, put some jelly on the end of his nose, stick a cotton ball to the jelly and race back to tag the next player in line. The cotton ball must stay stuck to the end of the child's nose as he runs back to the starting line. Each player must do the same thing. The first team to finish the relay wins the game.
Messy Games
Tell everyone to select a partner and give each pair a raw egg. Players must stand facing their partners 5 feet apart. When you say "Toss," the players must toss the egg to their partners. If they catch it, they must both take large steps back and toss again. If they drop it or the egg breaks when they catch it, the team is out of the game. The team who can toss the egg from the farthest distance wins the game. For a variation, use water balloons instead of eggs.
Paper Games
Make a family trivia for the children to see how much they know about their family. Ask questions like "Name three of your aunts" and "Name three of your cousins." The first child to fill out the trivia correctly wins the game. For another paper game, make a family name game of bingo. Fill out bingo squares with names of family members. Write all the names on small slips of paper and put them in a bowl. Draw names and call them out. The first child to get a bingo and yell "I love my family," wins the game.
Scavenger Hunt
Create an outdoor scavenger hunt. Make several lists with 20 nature items, such as a black rock, a purple flower, a green leaf and a blade of grass, on each list. Divide the children into teams and give each team a list. The first team to find 15 of the 20 nature items wins the game. For another hunt, create a candy scavenger hunt. Hide several pieces of wrapped candy all over the play area and give each child a bag. The children can keep the candy they find, and the child who finds the most pieces of candy wins another prize.
