Myth Buster Activities for Kids

The popular Discovery Channel show "MythBusters" tests myths through scientific methodology to determine whether the myths hold water. The TV show is both entertaining and educational and encourages children to take an interest in science. There are several "MythBusters" activities for children including online games and quizzes to experiments children can perform at home.
  1. "MythBusters" Science Kits

    • Your children can solve well-known myth at home with the official "MythBusters" science kits. The kits follow the same trial-and-error, hands-on experimentation as seen in the show. There are five themed science kits including "Crashes and Collisions," which test how variables affect a car's velocity. The "Science of Sports" looks at finding the "sweet spot" on a baseball bat. Rockets are launched in the "Forces of Flight." The "Power of Air Pressure" answers questions like can bones can predict storms? The "Weird World of Water" focuses on properties of water and whether it's possible to walk on it.

    Fact or Fiction Quizzes

    • Test your critical thinking by answering the fact or fiction quizzes on the "Mythbusters" website. There are more than 60 quizzes about animals, James Bond, the weather, sports, food and cars. After selecting the answer the truth about each statement is relieved. For example the myth that eating turkey makes you sleepy is false. Turkey does contain the natural sedative amino acid tryptophan, as do many other foods, but not enough is consumed in one sitting to have any effect.

    "Mythbusters" Match Game

    • Let your child can test his memory by playing the "MythBusters" match game available on the Discovery website. Identical to the game "Memory", the aim is to match all the cards with the identical twin. A timer records how long you take as well as how many moves you need to match all the cards. This allows you to improve for the second round. Take turns competing against your child and see who has a better memory.

    "MythBusters" DVD Game

    • Debunk myths from the comfort of the couch with the "MythBusters" DVD Game. Solve true or false questions like: Should you really be drinking eight glasses of water a day? by finding visual clues on screen and using sound to detect differences to move your token along the board. There are three difficulty settings with which you can solve more than 300 myths. The game is designed players ages 10 and up and can be played with up to four people.
