Easy Games
For an easy alphabet game, print each letter on a sheet of paper and place the letters on the floor in a circle. Write the letters on small slips of paper and put them in a small can. Play music and tell the children to walk around the letters. When the music stops, each child must stand on a letter. Draw a letter from the can and award a prize to the player standing on that letter. Make the game more interesting by having the child call out a word that starts with that letter before claiming his prize.
Memory Games
Write several letters on a chalkboard or dry-erase board and have the children study the letters. Tell the children to close their eyes or put their heads down on their desks and erase one letter. When the children look back at the board, the first child to tell you the missing letter wins a small prize. To make the game harder, erase more than one letter and ask the children to tell you each letter missing in order to win a prize. For another memory game, write the letter of the alphabet on index cards (make a set of lowercase and a set of uppercase). Place the cards face down on a table and let the children play a game of memory. If a child finds a pair (a matching uppercase and lowercase letter), she can keep it and go again. The child with the most pairs of letters at the end of the game wins.
Magnetic Letter Games
Place several magnetic letters on a magnet board for the children to use. Have two children stand at the board, each child standing in front of a set of letters. Call out a color, such as blue. The children must put together a word using only blue magnetic letters. The first child done wins a prize. For another idea, call out "three-letter word" and the first child to spell out a three-letter word wins the game.
Alphabet Bingo
Make bingo cards by writing letters of the alphabet in each bingo square. Call out letters and have the children mark their cards using small foam letters. The first child to get a bingo wins the game. Tell the children to mark the bingo cards using the same letters of craft foam. You can make lowercase lettering bingo cards, uppercase lettering cards or a mix of both.
