Easy Crafts
Give your students pictures of knights, swords and shields to color. The children can use markers, crayons and paint to color the pictures. For another easy Renaissance craft, let the children make their own swords and shields. Give the children cardboard to cut into the shape of a sword or shield. They can cover the sword or shield with aluminum foil to make it shiny. For added decoration, give the children stickers and markers to decorate their crafts.
Relay Races
Create some Renaissance-themed relay races for your students with old-fashioned goblets (plastic) and two Renaissance costumes. Mark the starting line and run-to line 25 feet apart. Help the students form two teams, and have them line up at the starting line. Place a bucket of water at the run-to line and two empty buckets at the starting line. Each player must carry a goblet to the run-to line, get water and run it back to pour it in the team's bucket. The team that fills its empty bucket first wins the game. For a variation, give each team a Renaissance costume (found online and at many costume shops). Each player on the team must put on the costume, run to the run-to line and back to the starting line. The first team to have all players do this wins the game.
Juggling Activities
Juggling and jugglers were popular in the Renaissance days. Give each student three inflated balloons and have him practice juggling the balloons. After everyone practices for five minutes, give the players soft foam balls to try to juggle. Challenge your students to try their best by awarding a small prize to any child who can juggle for 30 seconds.
Renaissance Treasure Hunt
Hide several Renaissance-themed items, such as plastic toy swords, shields, horses and small balls (like juggling balls). Give each student a small paper sack and have her hunt for the hidden items. The child who finds the most items wins the game. For another idea, have a jester hunt since jesters were popular in the Renaissance era. Hide several pictures of jesters around the play area, and have children hunt for the jesters.
