Emotion Games for Toddlers

Help toddlers recognize different emotions by creating entertaining games for them to play. Young children can learn how to identify and deal with emotions while participating in games about emotions at home or in a classroom. Encourage the toddlers to pay attention and try their best by awarding small prizes to game participants. Get started making emotion games for toddlers today with a few supplies and your creative imagination.
  1. Flashcard Games

    • Make several flashcards with a different emotion face on each. Some emotion examples include happy, mad, sad, tired, hot, sleepy and cold. Go over each flashcard with the toddlers at least twice. Hold up a card and have the toddlers guess what emotion is represented. The first toddler to guess the correct emotion wins a small prize. For another version, say the emotion aloud and the first toddler to act out the correct emotion wins a prize.

    Memory Games

    • Use the emotion flashcards or make you own cards by printing two of each emotion. Place the cards face down on a table and show the toddlers how to play a game of memory. If player flips over two matching cards, he keeps the pair and goes again. The player with the most matches at the end of the game wins a prize. For another memory emotion game, stand in front of the toddlers and make a pattern of facial expressions. For example, make a happy face, sad face and another happy face. Select one toddler to remember and show the pattern. If he is correct, he wins a prize.

    Easy Games

    • Print a picture of each emotion on sheets of paper. Place the pictures on the floor in a circle. Write down the names of the same emotions and place them in a bowl. Play music and have the children walk around the emotions. When the music stops, tell each toddler to stand on an emotion. Draw an emotion from the bowl and the child standing on that emotion wins a prize. For added fun, have the children do the same emotion they are standing on before you draw a winner.

    Paper Face Games

    • Cut out pictures of people's faces with different emotions. Use a magazine or print some from online. Give each child a paper plate and some faces. Call out an emotion, such as happy. The toddlers must find a happy face. She must hold her plate up and show you the happy face in order to receive a prize. For a variation, play this game backwards. Have a toddler call out an emotion and you find a picture of someone in a magazine with that emotion to show the children.
