Growing-Up Games for Girls

When your preteen girl is going through the challenges of growing up, it's helpful for her to play games or role-play to explore the feelings and situations she is going through. Introduce her to a few games to get through the process. From board games to imaginative play, she will be attracted to the ones that are the most beneficial.
  1. Board Games

    • The TableTopics Moms and Daughters edition helps girls learn from their mothers.

The Game of Life is a classic board game that deals with the things many of us do when we grow up: go to college, get married, buy a home, have children and pay taxes. It's a timeless game and a great way for girls to get a look at what might happen in the years ahead.

Table Topics is a card game featuring questions that prompt inquisitive discussion about fun or informative issues. The Moms and Daughters edition helps girls to realize might have a lot more in common with their mothers than they thought. Girls can get advice through fun Q &A and learn about the different problems and questions their moms dealt with when they were growing up.

    Wii and Nintendo DS Games

    • Success when playing a video game can give girls self-confidence.

Played on the Nintendo DS or Wii platform, the Daring Game for Girls teaches girls life skills, involves them in entrepreneurial experiences and illustrates famous women in history and what they accomplished. This game encourages girls to use their intelligence and praises them for their victories.

The Imagine series of games from Ubisoft lets girls role-play several different careers including doctor, teacher, reporter and zookeeper. The Imagine games are played on a Nintendo DS.

    Internet Games

    • The Internet provides many opportunities for game-playing.

The Treasury Direct Kids website teaches girls information about money and debt with saving and money games.

Miley Cyrus Growing Up is an Internet game where girls can dress Miley in different fashions and hairstyles.

The Beinggirl.com website has a game called Girl 2 Goddess that deals with social issues, bodily functions and grooming problems.

On KidsHealth.org, girls can play games and do experiments that deal with health and nutrition for growing bodies.

    Role-Playing Games

    • Let your daughter role-play different career choices.

Role-playing is an excellent way for girls to imagine themselves when they are older. In the form of a game, growing up is put in a nonthreatening context. Help your child learn about a career choice she's interested in. When she has enough information, play a family game where she role-plays being a woman in that career. Ask questions so she can use her new knowledge. Involve younger children if possible so the girl can take a position of authority.

For another role-playing opportunity, read the Lauren Myracle 'tween series of books and role-play with your daughter about some of the situations the growing-up heroine Winnie goes through. Ask her how she would handle similar situations. Does she think Winnie did the right thing? Would she do something differently?
