Games to Play for Five to Eight Year Olds at Church

Use games to review Bible stories, verses and concepts with 5- to 8-year-olds at church. Aside from teaching children about the Bible, games will help them build social skills and make new friends. Encourage all the children to play along by awarding Biblical stickers, bookmarks and coloring books to game winners. All you need are a few supplies and some game ideas to get started.

Memory Games
- Write a Bible verse on a chalkboard or dry-erase board and ask the children to practice reading the verse. Tell the children to place their heads down on their desks and place two post-it notes over two of the words in the verse. Ask the children to look back at the verse and the first two children who can tell you the missing words of the verse win a prize. For a harder version, cover up half of the verse and the first child to tell you the exact missing words wins a prize.
Bingo Games
- Make bingo cards with pictures of a cross, a Bible, a heart, a star and a picture of Jesus. Print the same pictures on small slips of paper and put them in a bowl. Give each child a bingo card and a small bowl of bingo markers. Draw pictures from the bowl and have the children mark their cards. The first child to get a bingo and yell, "I Love Jesus," wins the game. When teaching the young students about the books of the Bible, write a book name in each one of the bingo squares. Write the book names on slips of paper and play the same way.
Ten Commandment Games
- Hang a poster on the wall with the Ten Commandments and tell the children to study the commandments. Take the poster down and ask the children questions about the Ten Commandments. For each correct answer, a child earns one point. The child with the most points at the end of the game wins a prize. For a variation, divide the children into teams and ask the children to work together to answer the questions. The first team to earn 10 points wins the game.
Treasure Hunts
- Create a Noah's Ark treasure hunt using small plastic toy animals from your local toy store or online. Hide the animals all over the play area and give each child a small plastic bag. When you say, "Hunt," the children must find as many animals as they can. The child who finds the most animals wins the game and a prize. For another variation, explain how all the animals were in pairs of two on the ark. Hide two of each animal and tell the children to find a pair. The first child to find a matching pair of animals wins a prize.

Kids Games
