In the Unites States it's called Cat's Cradle, and is generally practiced by school children, but this hobby is known worldwide. One of the simpler shapes to make with string is known by many names like the the fishing spear, the turkey foot or the witches broom. The string witches broom is one of the first shapes children learn in string play, and is a common shape in many cultures.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a 24-inch piece of string into a loop with a strong square knot. Pull the ends of the string tight to make sure the knot won't come undone.

    • 2

Hold the string loop by slipping it over both of your thumbs. Move your hands away from each other until the string loop is barely taut.

    • 3

Curl your hand closed and slip your pinky fingers into the string loop. Open your hand back up. The loop will now be held open, strung along the palm of each hand and stretched from hand to hand. The string will be behind each thumb and each pinky.

    • 4

Hold your hands apart so the string is taut. Reach forward with your right forefinger and slip it under the string on your left palm. Pull the string away from the palm slightly. Rotate your finger away from you to make a 360 degree turn, twisting the string loop in a complete circle around your finger.

    • 5

Pull your hands apart again, keeping all the strings in their places on your fingers. Slip your left forefinger down through the loop on your right forefinger and underneath the string on your right palm. Pull your hands apart again.

    • 6

Bend your right pinky and thumb down and allow the string to slip off of both fingers. You will be left with the handle of the broom attached to your right forefinger and the bristles of the broom attached to the fingers on your left hand.
