Bible Verse Games for 4 & 5-Year-Olds

Teachers use games to illustrate biblical verses to young children. When teaching four- and five- year olds different Bible verses, you can create entertaining games that will pique their interest. With their short attention spans, use hands-on games to keep the children involved in learning the verses. Entice the young kids to play along by awarding biblical stickers and bookmarks to the game winners. Some game ideas and a few inexpensive supplies are all you need to get started.
  1. Balloon Games

    • For an easy balloon game, write down Bible verses on small slips of paper. Place each verse in an inflated balloon. Have each child select a balloon then tell all the children to sit in a circle with their balloons. One at a time, each child must sit on his balloon to pop it, then read the Bible verse aloud to the class. Since some children might not be able to read, help them. For another balloon game, teach the children a specific Bible verse. Write the words on the verse on slips of paper and place each word in a i balloon and inflate it. Have the children pop all the balloons and retrieve the words. They must work together to put the Bible verse in the correct order. Award small participation prizes to all players.

    Memory Games

    • Write Bible verses on index cards (two of each Bible verse) for a memory game. Place the cards face down and have one child select two cards. If a player finds a match, he can go again. The player with the most Bible verse matches wins the game. For another idea, play this game in teams and the team with the most matches at the end of the game wins. Make the cards more durable and last longer by laminating each.

    Bible Verse Bingo

    • Make bingo cards and write short Bible verses in each square. Write the same verses on small slips of paper and place them in a bowl. Give each child a bingo card and bingo markers. Call out the Bible verses and have the children mark their cards. The first child to get a bingo vertically, diagonally or horizontally and yell, "Jesus Loves Me!" wins the game. For another variation, use words from different Bible verses, instead of the entgire verse, in bingo squares.

    Team Games

    • Divide the young children into two teams and have each team sit in a circle. Give each team a Bible verse to practice. When you say, "Go team one," each player from team one must recite the Bible verse in order one word at a time. For example, the first player will say the first word of the Bible verse, the next player will say the next word and each player thereafter must say the words of the verse in the correct order. If they answer correctly, the team earns one point. The first team to earn five points wins the game. For another team game, write a Bible verse on a dry-erase or chalkboard. Select one player from each team to come up to the board and put their back facing the board. Erase one of the words from the verse. When you say, "Turn around," the first player to turn around and give you the word that is missing from the verse earns a point for his team. The first team to score 10 points wins the game.
