Games to Play with Friends
Play a game with some friends where you make up your own native American name. Native American names for boys and girls can be found at apples4theteacher.com. Pick out a couple of ideas for names that, translated, mean "corn," "bird" and "moon." Write down the ideas on cards and let the everyone draw a card. Let your friends come up with a name and use them to play the "Guess the Name" game. For another activity, check out some books on native American symbols and use these symbols as a model to make new symbols. Hand out papers and use crayons, markers and paint to draw symbols for the chosen names. Mix the drawings in a bag and pick out one and let your friends guess the name. Use the new names and play a naming ceremony or opening ceremony. While you're checking out books, find some on how native American names are pronounced and write these down on one side of a card. Write down the name on the other side. Hold up the card and let your friends try to pronounce the names. Many native American names are difficult to pronounce, so pick some easy ones to start with.
