Hopscotch Directions

A classic childhood game, hopscotch encourages outdoor play. Set up a hopscotch court in the driveway or front sidewalk and gather the family. Spend the afternoon outdoors enjoying some quality time together trying to beat the hopscotch course. Playing childhood games also helps the whole family get some exercise. According to an article published by "Fitness Magazine," a game of hopscotch helps improve balance and strength, challenging leg and core muscles. Playing for a solid hour burns an average of 175 calories.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a series of connected squares on the sidewalk to create a hopscotch court. Draw the first square and label it No. 1. Directly above, draw two more squares side by side and label them Nos. 2 and 3. Center another box above this square and label it No. 4. Draw two more squares next to each other above No. 4, labeling them 5 and 6. Center another square above them, labeling it 7. Draw two more adjacent squares above 7, labeling them 8 and 9.

    • 2

Draw a half moon above the hopscotch court to create the home base.

    • 3

Throw the stone, or bean bag, so that it lands inside the first square.

    • 4

Hop through the court, using only one foot in the rows containing one square and two feet in the side-by-side squares. Skip the first square, which contains the stone or bean bag.

    • 5

Hop into the half moon court and turn around. Hop back down the court and pick up the stone.

    • 6

Repeat the process, tossing the stone into the second square, if the player did not lose his balance in round one. If the player should stumble, the next player gets to take a turn. Stepping on the lines between the squares also results in losing a turn.

    • 7

Repeat until one player makes it through the entire sequence, skipping each number. This player will win.
