Preschool Pumpkin Games

Give your preschoolers some hands-on activities during the fall season by creating games with pumpkins. Starting in early October, pumpkins of all shapes and sizes are available at most grocery stores and markets. Awarding pumpkin stickers and toys to all game winners will encourage the preschoolers to play along. With careful planning and a few inexpensive supplies, you have all you need to create pumpkin games.
  1. Pumpkin Shape Find

    • Use a marker to draw different shapes on the bottom of miniature pumpkins. Hide the pumpkins around the room. Call out a shape and have the preschooler look for the pumpkin with the correct shape on it. Award a prize to the preschooler who finds the correct pumpkin first. For another variation, write numbers on the pumpkins. For colors, paint the pumpkins different colors and hide them. Call out a color and have the preschoolers look for that color of pumpkin.

    Pumpkin Pass

    • Have all the preschoolers sit in a circle. Hand one player a small pumpkin. Play some Halloween-themed music or a song about pumpkins and have the preschoolers pass the pumpkin around the circle. When the music stops, the player holding the pumpkin is out of the game. The last player remaining wins the game and a prize. For a variation, use a toy plush pumpkin and the last player standing wins the plush pumpkin.

    Miniature Pumpkin Bowling

    • Empty and clean 10 20-ounce plastic soda bottles for a game of miniature pumpkin bowling. For added decoration, paint the soda bottles with orange paint. After they dry, use a black marker to draw jack-o-lantern faces on the bottles. Arrange the bottles in a pyramid shape, like bowling pins. Mark a standing line 10 feet from the pins. Give each preschooler two miniature pumpkins to roll at the pins. If he knocks all the pins down, award him a prize.

    Pumpkin Brains

    • Carve a medium-sized pumpkin and fill it with cooked spaghetti noodles. Mix several pieces of wrapped candy and lollipops in the noodles. Have the preschoolers sit in a circle and hand the pumpkin to one child. Play some music and have the children pass the pumpkin around the circle. When the music stops, the player holding the pumpkin can dig through the "pumpkin brains" to find a piece of candy. Allow each child to get at least one piece of candy from the pumpkin.
