Children's Games for Competition

Children learn many life lessons as they grow up. One important lesson for them to learn involves competition. Competition can be healthy for children, as it teaches them how to work together, how to win graciously and loose with dignity. Games are not merely an engaging and stimulating way to teach children the values associated with competition; they also serve as a source of entertainment.
  1. Flag Relay Race

    • Divide children into two or three groups. Run strips of masking tape along the ground to indicate the lanes of the race. About a distance of 10 feet away from the starting point, place a bucket for each team and fill the buckets with an equal amount of flags for each person on each team. Teams stand in a single-file line behind the starting point. On your mark, the first child on each team runs to the bucket, grabs a flag, runs back to the starting point and tags the next player. The game continues until all the members of one team have completed the relay; this wins the game.

    Popping Balloons

    • In this game, children try to be the last one remaining with an inflated balloon. Blow up a balloon for each child. Tie a piece of yarn around the knot of each balloon and have children loosely tie the yarn around their ankles. When you indicate the start of the game, kids try to stomp on competitors' balloons to pop them. Upon having their balloons popped, kids must sit out of the game. The last person standing wins the game.

    Wrapping Race

    • Kids wrap each other up in this competitive game. Divide children into groups of three and provide each group with rolls of toilet paper. Instruct each group to select a person to be wrapped. On your mark, the other two players take a roll of toilet paper and wrap this person. The first group to completely wrap the member from shoulders to ankles with toilet paper wins the game.

    Balloon Sandwich Race

    • This game also involves balloons, but instead of being popped, they must remain inflated. Divide a group of kids into pairs and provide each pair with a blown-up balloon. Place cones on the ground about 10 feet apart to indicate the starting and ending points of the race. Have the partners stand back-to-back and place a balloon between them. On your mark, children try to move as quickly as they can without dropping or popping the balloon. If the partners drop or pop their balloon, they must start the race over. The first team to make it to the ending point with an intact balloon wins the game.
