Flying Disk Fricassee
When you're looking for a fun game indoors, head first for the kitchen to cook up some action. There's a host of flying disk tournament equipment waiting in the cabinets. Grab some round plastic container lids in a variety of sizes, then gather some pots and pans. You won't need the metal lids. Arrange the pots and pans in a line, then walk about ten feet away and try to fling the lids into the pots and pans Frisbee-style. Assign points to each pot and pan. Each time a lid is successfully tossed into the pot, the thrower earns points. Hold a tournament to determine the champion.
Percussion Idol
Forget American Idol. You can host Percussion Idol in your own kitchen. First, hunt for equipment to create a marching band and a percussion section. Use upside down pots, containers and plastic bowls for drums. Use wooden spoons and French mixing spatulas for drumsticks. Pot lids make great cymbals. Encourage your kids to explore the different sounds they can make, culminating in either a percussion show competition similar to "Stomp" or a marching band. Play some music in the background so the whole family can march around the house and play a kitchen-inspired instrument. Assign judges to award points for the best instruments, best sounds and best musicians.
Air Show Extravaganza
Paper planes rule the airspace inside when rain is falling from the skies outside. Standard printer paper works best for this project. Encourage kids to come up with their own designs or consult a paper airplane website such as Alex's Paper Airplanes in the reference section of this article. Have kids decorate the planes with markers or crayons, then put on an airshow. Designate a pretend TV show commentator to make the show more official. Award paper medals for the planes that fly the farthest or loop the best.
Origami Explorers
Kids will love projects that turn pieces of paper into imaginative animals. Just employ the art of origami. Use colored or plain white paper. Consult the Origami Instructions website for instructions. Encourage kids to make an entire zoo of origami animals. Make jungle animals and go on a safari. Play pet shop and make origami animals for the store. Make animal families and then build towns out of blocks for them to live in. The key is bringing the creations to life with your imagination.
