How to Play the Card Game Goldfish

Goldfish is a common children's card game played by two or more players. Also known as "Go Fish" or simply "Fish," the object of the game is to collect as many "books" or "sets of four" as possible in a standard deck of playing cards. Goldfish is a helpful tool to teach young children about numbers and how to organize similar cards while emphasizing respect for others by relying on honesty.

Instructions

    • 1

Shuffle the deck thoroughly to ensure that the cards are random.

    • 2

Select a dealer by randomly choosing cards from the deck. The player with the highest card is designated the dealer. Reshuffle the deck and have the player to the right of the dealer cut.

    • 3

Deal five cards face down to each player (seven cards each if only two people are playing), one card at a time to each player. Place the remaining cards in the deck face down at the center of the table in arm's reach of everyone.

    • 4

Start the game with the player to the left of the dealer. Select one opponent and request a specific card value from his hand. You are free to ask any player for a specific card value; for example, if you have one King, choose one player from the game and ask him "Do you have any Kings?" If he does, he must give you all of his Kings. If not, the player states "Goldfish" (or "Go Fish") which ends your turn.

    • 5

Continue your turn if your opponent gave you one or more cards. You are free to ask any other player for cards or you can ask the same player again. Your turn continues unless your request is answered with "Goldfish."

    • 6

Draw a card from the deck if your opponent says "Goldfish." This signals the end of your turn. The next player to the left begins his turn by asking any player for a specific card.

    • 7

Place your "book" or "four of kind" face up on the table as you receive it. Thirteen books are available in a single game.

    • 8

Continue until all 13 books are taken and presented on the table. Count each player's books. Win the game by having more than your opponents.
