Homemade Yoyo
Make a yoyo out of an empty thread spool.
Wrap the spool with sturdy string and tie a loop at the end to fit a finger through.
Add a personalized touch to the yoyo with paint or markers that spell out his name.
Board Games
Make your own board games out of poster board, construction paper and cardboard pieces. Children learn well through play. Board games not only entertain but they also reinforce skills and cognitive thinking.
Create games that might appeal to his specific interest. For example, if he loves to play baseball, you can make a board game in the shape of a baseball diamond. Players can take turns rolling the die and moving around the diamond. Another option for a board game is to make a game based on school. Each section of the board can ask questions about a certain subject and test his skills.
Personalize the board with pictures or illustrations of him or things that he enjoys.
Miniatures
Create small miniatures for him to play with out of any number of different materials. Many young boys love to play with miniature figurines --- whether it is army men, cowboys, dinosaurs, monsters or various animals.
Shape sculpting clay into your desired shape. Use the palms of your hand to form the shape. Add detailing with toothpicks, needles and other sculpting tools.
Bake it in the oven in accordance with packaging instructions. Paint and customize, as desired. Instead of clay, you can also sculpt miniatures out of paper mache, craft wire or even aluminum foil.
Puzzles
Take a picture of him or something he enjoys and blow it up at your local printing company or on your home computer.
Paste the photo onto a sheet of cardboard and allow the glue to dry. Add a protective clear coat over the surface. Once the clear coat is dry, cut out jigsaw pieces with a straight blade.
Offer the pieces to the boy in an envelope or decorative bag.
