Safe School Games

It is a school's responsibility to ensure the safety of students during school hours. As such, schools have rules when it comes to the types of games that are permissible on the playground. Even when children play games considered safe by the school, it's still important for teachers and faculty to chaperone students in case something happens.
  1. Musical Chairs

    • Musical chairs is a traditional game played in schools that requires chairs and music. The chairs are assembled back to back in a row. The number of chairs used in the game must be one less than the number of students playing. That is, if 12 students are playing, there should be 11 chairs. While the music plays, the students walk around the chairs. Whenever the music stops, students must sit in the nearest chair or race to one that is empty. The child left standing is eliminated. Each time a student is eliminated, a chair is removed from the row. The student who sits in the last chair wins.

    Tag

    • Tag is a classic outdoor game that involves running and chasing other players. This is a safe game for students to play at school because it doesn't require using of objects that could cause accidents. In the game of tag, the person who's "it" must catch and tag another person to get that player out of the game. Students being chased must avoid the person who's "it." They can also hide at their home base, which is off-limits to the "it" person. If the person who's "it" tags all of the kids until they're out, he wins the game.

    Hopscotch Math

    • Hopscotch, a game drawn onto pavement with chalk, involves students hopping into various squares. An educational spin on the game is to draw the hopscotch board like a calculator, using numbers 1 through 9 and the addition, subtraction and equal signs. When it is the student's turn to hopscotch, she steps up to the calculator and someone else in the group calls out a math equation, such as "1 + 1 = 2." The player must hop between the squares called out. If she falls or missteps along the way, she's out.

    Capture the Flag

    • Capture the flag is an active game that involves running around a playground. Divide students into two large teams with each team receiving a flag. The teams tape their flag to a post on their side of the playing field. The goal is to capture the other team's flag and bring it back without getting caught. Some students are responsible for guarding the flag, while others must capture the other team's flag. If a student is tagged by another team member while attempting to steal the flag, he's out of the game.
