Games for Children 3-7

Few children will refuse if you want to play a game. Interesting games offer a way to soothe cranky kids or stimulate bored ones and will get the kids thinking or moving. These free, easy games require no materials, can be played almost anywhere and adapted for children ages 3 and up.
  1. I Spy

    • This game can be played anywhere, but works well in the car when there are a lot of objects to see. Change the rules of this game for young children by using letters and sounds, as well as categories. Variations can include, "I spy with my little eyes, something beginning with the letter 's' " or even, "the sound s." Also try categories for younger children. For example, "I spy with my little eyes, something that is blinking," or "something that is green." The person who gets the answer correct gets to start the next, "I spy..."

    Twenty Questions

    • Twenty questions works well with kids of all ages. Begin this game with selecting someone to choose a person, place or object that others have to identify. The people in the group ask questions that require only a "yes" or "no" answer. Ask a maximum of 20 questions about any given object. Anyone can guess the thing at any time. If a person guesses correctly before 20 questions, that person selects the next object for the group to ask questions about.

    Freeze Tag

    • Play Freeze Tag when children have ample room to run around, preferably outside, and when you have a group of four or more children. It's a great way to get kids exercising. Designate one child as "it" and she runs around trying to tag as many children as possible. If another child is tagged, the child must "freeze" in one position and not move until one of the other children tags the child again to "unfreeze" him. If the child is not able to stand in one position and falls down or moves, the child is "it." If the same child is "it" for more than four or five minutes, designate a new child as "it."

    Laughing Game

    • It is easy for a small child to get upset and this game helps change her attitude quickly. Play this game with two or more people. You can play anywhere, but it can be more fun if everyone is lying on their backs on the ground and puts her head on another person's stomach. The first person starts by saying, "Ha." The next person continues with, "Ha, ha." The third person says, "Ha, ha, ha." The group continues adding "Ha" until the game ends when everyone bursts into laughter.
