Battleship Game Instructions

The game of "Battleship" was copyrighted in 1967 by Milton Bradley. In the game, two players place their ships on a grid and then try to sink their opponent's ships by calling out grid coordinates. Placing ships and then accurately hitting an opponent's ships requires strategy and deductive reasoning, but the game is designed for ages 7 and older. A complete game takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Face your opponent. Raise the lid of each game case so players cannot see their opponent's game board.

    • 2

Place your battleships on the "ocean" grid in the bottom of the case. Make sure your opponent doesn't see where you put your ships. You can place ships horizontally or vertically. You must place ships entirely in the ocean, they cannot hang off the edge. Once you and your opponent have placed all of your ships you cannot change their positions.

    • 3

Take turns calling out the coordinates for one location on the grid by announcing the location's corresponding letter and number.

    • 4

Announce that a shot is either a "hit" or a "miss" based on whether part of a ship is placed over that coordinate. Place a white peg in the corresponding spot in the upper target grid for a miss and a red peg for a hit. The player whose ship is hit places a red peg in the appropriate spot on the ship and announces what type of ship was hit.

    • 5

Continue alternating shots with players calling out a hit or miss after each shot. A ship is "sunk" when all of its spaces are filled with red pegs.

    • 6

The winner is the first person to sink all five of the opponent's ships.
