Cowboy Theme Games for 9 Year Olds

Nine-year-old children who love cowboys will enjoy playing games that make them feel like they are a part of the Wild West. Whether you are planning a cowboy church party, birthday party or just looking for games for your cowboy-loving children, you can incorporate a western theme into a few games the children can play. Award all contest winners with prizes like bandannas, plastic sheriff badges and toy horses.
  1. Cowboy Showdown

    • Divide the players into two teams and give each player a water gun. Mark two lines 5 feet apart and have each team line up on a line (with their backs facing the other team). Count to five and say, "draw." When you say, "draw," the players must turn around facing the other team and immediately point their water gun at any player on the other team. If two players are pointing the guns at each other, they can squirt each other for fun but are out of the game. Everyone else is safe until the next round. Keep playing until only two players remain who are the winners of the game.

    Cowboy Relay Race

    • Have two even teams line up at a starting line and give each team a pair of large cowboy boots, a play holster and a cowboy hat. Place a cone on the ground 15 feet from the starting line for both teams. The first player in line must put on the entire cowboy outfit and run to the cone. He must race back to his team and hand off the cowboy outfit to the next player in line. Each player must put on the outfit, run to the cone and back to hand off the clothes. The first team to finish the race wins the game. For added fun, give each team a stick horse or broom to act as a horse, while running the race.

    Cowboy Hat Toss

    • Place wooden stakes into the ground and draw a standing line 6 feet from the stakes. You can also use the plastic stakes that come in kids ring toss games. Players must stand at the standing line and attempt to toss a cowboy hat onto the wood stake. Give each player five tries and award a prize to any player who successfully lands the hat on a stake.

    Pass the Cowboy Lasso

    • Give each player a straw and divide all players into two teams. Have both teams line up in single file lines and give the first player in each team line a twisted pretzel. The pretzel represents a cowboy's lasso, which the teams must pass all the way down their team line. However, players must place the straws in their mouth and pass the lasso using only the straw. If a player uses her hands or if the lasso falls to the ground, she must start over at the beginning of the team line. The first team to get the cowboy's lasso all the way down their team line wins the game. For younger children, they can simply hold the straws in their hands to pass the lasso.
