Chatting Games for Kids Under 13

Chatting games make great icebreakers for kid's parties, especially if there are children who do not know many of the other kids. They are good games to play while you are waiting for all of the children to arrive. They are also helpful for involving shy guests who may be reluctant to get involved in more boisterous games right away.
  1. Who Am I?

    • As each guest arrives, place a Post-it note on his forehead with the name of a famous person written on it. Have the children move around the room talking to each other to try to find out who they are. They are only allowed to ask questions with yes or no answers, such as "Am I alive?" or "Am I female?" The game continues until everyone has figured out who they are.

    Chat Show

    • Have the children break off into pairs. One child is the interviewer and the other is the chat show guest. Have the interviewer find out three interesting facts about her chat show guest by giving them five minutes to chat together. Have them switch roles and repeat the exercise. Bring the children back into a group and have each interviewer introduce her guest. For example, she might say, "My guest tonight is Max. He has a lizard called Rambo, likes climbing trees and had mushroom pizza for dinner every night when he went on holiday to Italy."

    Chinese Whispers

    • Have the children sit in a circle. One player starts by whispering a random phrase into the ear of the person on his left. That person repeats what he has heard to the next player. Play continues around the circle until it reaches the player who started the game. The last player in the circle says out loud the phrase that he heard. The first player then says the phrase he started with. There is often a hilarious difference between the two.

    Just a Minute

    • Prepare this game by writing topics on pieces of paper and placing them in a hat. Topics can be any random subject that children will be familiar with, such as school dinners, ball games, ice-cream flavors or movie actors. One player starts by picking out a topic. She then has one minute to talk about the topic without hesitating or repeating herself, or she is out of the game. Play in teams and award points to any team member who completes the challenge.
