Fun Ground Games

Playing games outdoors gives kids a chance to get some fresh air while running and jumping in ways they can't inside. Many outdoor ground games require minimal materials; most of these games may be played simply by making drawings on the ground with chalk. These games can be played with a minimum of two players, but as is often the case, involving more friends can be more fun.
  1. Hopscotch

    • "Hopscotch" is a game you can play alone or with others. Use chalk to draw the numbers one through 10 in a line on the ground, each within its own square and in a specific pattern. The placement of the squares starts with the 1 at the bottom and ends with the 10 at the top. Numbers 4 and 5, and 7 and 8 are drawn side-by-side as pairs. Each player takes a turn throwing a rock into the square labeled 1 and hopping on each open square -- the same foot for each single square and both feet for the paired squares -- all the way to the 10 and back, without falling or going out of the border lines. The rock is retrieved as they return back, hopping off the board and walking back to the starting point. Anyone who falls or steps onto the border line loses his turn and needs to restart. Those who successfully complete a round move on to throwing the rock and retrieving it on the next number. The first child to get to 10 and make it up and down the board perfectly, wins the game.

    Twist and Tangle

    • Twist and Tangle is the outdoor version of the game Twister. Use chalk to draw on the ground two sets of the numbers one to six, and mix up the location of the numbers so you don't have two of the same numbers next to each other. Around each number draw a shape, such as a circle, square or triangle. Play the game with a minimum of two players. Each player takes a turn at rolling a dice and has to either place a hand or foot on one shape with the number. The more players you have, the more fun the game. You can find yourself and other players in tangled positions trying to reach for certain numbers. The player that falls or drops their elbow or knee to the ground loses.

    Marbles

    • Marbles is a game that involves placing marbles on the ground within a drawn circle. You need a minimum of two players and each player takes a turn to knocking the other player's marbles out of the circle using a larger marble. Rules may vary depending on how you want to play the game, but marbles may be randomly placed within the circle or set along the "X" and "Y" axis. Depending on the rules, marbles knocked out of the circle may be kept by other player or returned to its owner after the completion of the game.

    Shadow Tag

    • Shadow Tag is played the same ways as traditional tag, however, to tag another player, you need to catch and tap on their shadow rather than their body. Play the game with a minimum two players. Assign one player as "it" and have him count 10 seconds while the other players run the opposite direction of "it." After counting, "it" chases after the other players trying to tag their shadow. The player tagged becomes "it." The best time to play the game is during sunny days in the morning or mid-afternoon when shadows are more apparent.
