Wii and DS
Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS offer games for children that feature pets. Zhu Zhu Pets featuring the Wild Bunch is a game for the Wii, and it allows children to control a Zhu Zhu pet and play tag with other pets along the way. The pet will face obstacles and has to grab food for extra points. Once the key is found at the end of each level, the player unlocks the door to receive a trophy. This game doesn't allow pets to die so it's a good game for younger children. Zhu Zhu Pets 2 is for the DS, and the object of this game is to take your pet and find lost treasure before the Wild Bunch does. You must first "nuture" your pet by feeding and taking care of it until it's ready to play. Race track mazes take your pet through each level.
Virtual Pets
Webkinz are stuffed animals that have an accompanying website where you can play games with your virtual pet. You can buy Webkinz at specialty stores; each comes with a code to access the Webkinz website. After entering the code, children can take care of their pets while building virtual houses and backyards. Children can play games with their pets and accessorize them by earning coins. Adoptme.com is a website where children can adopt a virtual pet, such as a dog, cat, horse, monkey or turtle, and take care of them online. Pets can be entered in different types of beauty contests, and pets can perform various jobs to earn points.
Computer Games
Animal Games Zone features online games for children to play involving pets. There are pet dress up games where children can select items for their pets to wear, such as hats, sweaters and hand bags. Another game on this site is duck hockey where you match your duck against another. Hello Kitty features a game of matching cards, and funny cat bowling involves knocking over as many cats as possible.
Tamagotchi
Tamagotchis are small, hand-held virtual pets that were first available in 1996. The small, egg-shaped toy uses three small button controls. The object of this game is to keep the pet fed, clean, toileted, disciplined and happy. When the pet needs something, a beep will alert the child, and she can check to see what needs attention. Since Tamagotchis are so small, children can strap them onto a book bag or purse and take them everywhere.
