Games That Kids Can Make

Combine arts and crafts with game time for a unique and fun activity that will keep kids out of your hair, while engaging them in constructive, creative activities.
  1. Tic Tac Toe

    • Tic tac toe is a simple game for preschool-age children and Kindergarteners to make. Provide children with a sheet of construction paper, markers and a ruler. Instruct children to make a large grid on the paper, forming three vertical lines and three intersecting, horizontal lines, using markers and the ruler. Give kids their own set of stickers to use to play the game in lieu of drawing the traditional "X" and "O" symbols on the tic tac toe grid.

    Checkers

    • Homemade checker boards are a fun activity for older elementary school children. Provide kids with an 8 ½ by 11-inch piece of cardboard, or cut one from an unused box. Have kids make a grid with a ruler and marker, then instruct children to color in the boxes in any two colors of their choice, alternating colors. Give kids bottle caps or small, cardboard discs to paint and use as checker pieces.

    Twister®

    • Kids can make their own single-use Twister® mat out of construction paper and tape. Provide children with 10 sheets each of blue, red, green and yellow construction paper and instruct kids to tape the sheets together, alternating colors. Tape seams on the back of the paper mat for reinforcement. Kids can then color 16 corresponding color squares on a separate sheet of plain paper and draw a hand or foot on each square, indicating left or right, to direct specific placement. Use a die or other small object to roll onto the paper and determine gameplay.
