Guess the Color
Open a coloring book and select a page to color with a child. As the child picks up a crayon, ask her what color she has selected. If she is unsure, tell her what the color is. Because crayons have such colorful names, make a game out of discussing them. This is an entertaining way for young children to learn their colors.
Oh, No!
Instruct children to stay inside the lines while they are coloring and show them what you mean by doing some coloring of your own. Purposefully color outside the line and cry out "Oh, no! I colored outside the line." This will show children that it is important to follow rules and stay within the lines while coloring. Do not despair if kids have a hard time with this task because it is difficult to do, especially for smaller children.
Famous Artist
Encourage children to finish coloring the entire page before moving onto a fresh page. Explain that they need to start what they finish and that they are creating work for an art show. When the child has finished coloring, tell him to sign each page at the bottom, just like famous artists do. Have the child complete two or three pages. Have frames ready and waiting so that when the child is done signing his coloring pages, you can frame them immediately. Prop the framed art against a wall and have kids vote on their favorite one. The winner gets a blue ribbon that you made out of construction paper ahead of time.
Point-and-Click-Coloring Timed Game
Nontraditional coloring using a computer is something different for kids to do. Online coloring pages look like traditional sheets from a coloring book, but children use a virtual crayon to color by clicking on one of the many colors shown and then clicking on the item to color on their page. Make online coloring a competition with a timer to see how fast the page can be completed.
