Games to Play With 8-Year-Old Sunday School Children

Games can help teach children a Biblical lesson while attending Sunday school. When teaching a group of 8-year-old kids about the Bible, create a few games for them to play. Playing games can teach them about the Bible in a fun way, as well as build their social skills. Entice the children to try their best by awarding small pocket Bible and Biblical bookmarks to all game winners.

Trivia Games
- Use masking tape to make a 16-square grid on the ground. Make the grid four squares wide and four squares down. Divide the children into two teams. Give each team a set of beanbags; one black set and one red set. The first team must toss a beanbag into a square. Ask them a question about a Bible verse or lesson. If they answer correctly, they can keep the beanbag in that square. If they answer incorrectly, they must remove their beanbag and the other team has a chance to answer the question. The other team can place their beanbag in the square if they answer correctly. The first team to get four in a row wins the game. Another variation of this game is to play with a tic-tac-toe grid and play one-on-one.
Verse Games
- Write several Bible verses on a chalkboard or dry-erase board with a few missing words. Select one child to go up to the board and fill in the blanks of one of the verses. If he is correct, award him a prize. Allow each child a chance to complete a Bible verse. For another memory game, have two children stand back-to-back. You will start a Bible verse and the children must finish it by saying one word of the verse at a time (going back and forth). The first child to mess up loses the game.
Memory Games
- Divide the children into groups of two or three and give each group a Bible verse. The groups must brainstorm to come up with moves for their Bible verse. They can use arm, leg and body movements to "act" the verse. This can help the children memorize verses. For another memory game, write down several Bible verses on slips of paper. Write each verse twice. Place the verse face down and let the children play a game of memory. The child who has the most matches at the end of the game wins. To make the verse cards more durable write or print them on card stock paper and laminate each one.
Paper Games
- Play a game of Bible bingo by filling out the bingo cards with books from the Bible. Write the same books on small slips of paper and place them in a bowl. Give each child a bingo card and begin calling out the books. The first child to get a bingo wins the game. You can also create a word scramble game using the books of the Bible. Scramble several book names on a sheet of paper. Give each child a copy and see who can unscramble the words in the fastest amount of time.
