Fun Games for a Teenage Youth Group

Games for teen groups are short, simple activities that foster team building, set the tone for the group, help everyone get to know one another and feel safe and secure in the group setting. Meeting new people can be an awkward experience for teenagers. Involving the entire group at once can help them get past that awkward moment. Helping individuals feel more comfortable with themselves and with others is the purpose of these sometimes silly, but fun, games. Activities involving a lot of laughter release tension and in turn livens up meetings and spreads good feelings.
  1. Humans

    • These games involve teamwork. The Human Circle is formed by each person holding hands with the people on either side. Without letting go of hands, the circle tries to turn itself inside out. The Human Knot involves the group standing very close together. Each person grabs a hand of two other people, but not anyone next to him. Now they have to figure out how to undo the knot without letting go of one another's hands.

    Bodies

    • These games are guaranteed to be hilarious. Toe Fencing is played by pairs holding hands and facing each other. Then you try to tap the tops of each other's toes with your own. When one of the pair scores three hits, they switch partners. No toe stomping is allowed. People to People works like Simon says. Everyone pairs off except for "Simon." "Simon" calls out one to five directions for the partners, like nose-to-nose, finger to forehead, ankle to shoulder and so on. When "Simon" calls "People to People" everyone grabs a new partner, including "Simon," so a new person becomes "Simon."

    Races

    • For Cotton Ball, each person in the group is given a cotton ball. Everyone gets down on all fours and at the signal, blows their cotton balls across the finish line. The first one across the line wins. Races can also be done with balloons, blowing bubbles, life savers and toothpicks. Cookie Tower involves teams and cookies. One team member lies on the floor and the rest of the team stacks as many cookies as possible on that member's forehead before time is called. This works best if the person doesn't laugh.

    Elimination

    • In Hand Pat, the group forms a circle, crosses arms with the people on each side and lays their hands down flat on the table or floor. Someone is picked to start the pat and each hand pats the table in turn. If someone pats their hand twice, the direction changes and the patting reverses. If someone doesn't pat when it is her turn or pats when it isn't her turn, that hand is out. The winner is the only hand that hasn't made a mistake.
