Feed the Whale
Draw or print a picture of a whale's face on a large sheet of paper. Glue the paper to the bottom of a cardboard box and cut out the mouth. Get white beanbags and draw pictures of items whales eat, such as fish, krill, shrimp and squid. Mark a line about 10 feet away from the box (adjust the line closer for younger children and farther away for older children). Give the children the beanbags to try to toss into the whale's mouth. Award a prize to the children who successfully land "food" in the whale's mouth.
Whale Tag
Select one child to be the whale and all other players are the fish. When you say, "Go," the whale will try to tag the fish. If he tags someone, that player turns into a whale and helps him catch the other fish. The last fish left in the game wins the game. Allow the game winner to select the whale for the next game.
Whale Water Game
For an outdoor game, try the whale water game. Prepare several water balloons and place them in a bucket. Have all the players stand in a circle and select one player to be the whale. The whale must stand in the middle of the circle. Give one player a water balloon. She will toss the water balloon over the whale's head to another player in the circle. The players must keep tossing the water balloon over the whale's head until he hits it with his hand. The player who threw the balloon when he hits it with his hand is out of the game. The last player standing in the circle wins the game.
Baby Whale Relay Race
Pour two boxes of whale-shaped cheese crackers into two different bowls. Mark a starting line and finish line about 20 feet apart. Place the two bowls of whale crackers on the finish line. Divide the players into two teams and give the first player in each team line a spoon. Place two plastic cups of the same size at the starting line. When you say, "Race," the first players in line must race to the bowl of whale crackers and scoop some using the spoon. He must race back to his team and place them in his team's cup. He then gives the spoon to the next player in line who must do the same thing. The first team to fill up its cup with whale crackers wins the game.
