Fun Zoo Games

Many children find zoo animals fascinating and love playing games. You can easily combine these interests by incorporating zoo animals into fun games for a child's zoo party or for students learning about zoo animals in the classroom. Games are a good way to reinforce lessons about the exotic animals of the zoo.
  1. Elephant's Tail

    • Give each player a long piece of streamer to hang from the back of his pants. This is his "elephant tail." When you say, "Go," the players must try to nab other players' elephant tails. Once a player takes an elephant tail from a second player, the second player is out of the game. The last player with an elephant tail wins the game. Play this game in a large, open space so the players have room to run.

    Flamingo Contest

    • Tell the children about flamingos and how they can stand on one foot for a long period of time. Give the children a few minutes to practice and then have a contest. See which player can stand on one leg the longest. If her hands or other foot touches the ground at any time, she is out of the game. The player who can stand on one foot the longest wins the game.

    Zoo Animal Charades

    • Write down on index cards several zoo animal species, such as elephant, monkey, giraffe, snake, alligator and lion. Place the index cards in a bowl and divide the children into two teams. Each team must send one player up at a time to draw a name from the bowl. He must act out the animal without making any noises. If the team guesses the zoo animal correctly, the team earns a point. The first team to score five points wins the game.

    Monkey Relay Race

    • Divide the children into two teams and have them line up at a starting line. Place a cone about 20 feet from the starting line. Give the first player in each team line a wooden spoon and a banana. When you say, "Race," the first players in each line must place the banana on the wooden spoon. They must race to the cone and back to the next player in their team line. The players will hand the spoon and banana to the next players in line who must do the same thing. The first team to finish the relay race wins the game.
