At Home Supplies for a Magic Trick

Magic tricks require the skills of timing, misdirection and sleight of hand. Learning tricks involves improving your speed, accuracy and your stage persona. Though many magic tricks involve complicated tools, such as a box with two compartments, you can perform many tricks with a few simple materials found at home.
  1. Handcuffs

    • Many magic tricks involve taking an audience member or assistant and putting him in handcuffs to keep him contained. Depending on the magic trick, you can use real handcuffs, such as those a police officer would use or safety handcuffs. Safety handcuffs typically have a small knob or switch that you can pull to loosen the cuffs and pull them off the person. If you are using real handcuffs, keep the key close. Locking someone in handcuffs and losing the key can lead to serious frustration and may require the help of a locksmith.

    Scarf

    • During a magic trick, the magician must cover his actions using distraction. By placing a scarf over your hands as you perform the trick, you keep the audience in the dark. Some magicians place their trick on a table and cover it with a scarf as they perform the actions. Others may use a large towel, sheet or tarp to cover a box or cage as their assistant or audience member escapes. Most serious magicians use a sheet or tarp that does not look like a borrowed object. However, if you are new to magic you can borrow a silk or satin scarf from a woman in your life.

    Coins

    • Most people are familiar with the magic trick of a magician finding a coin in an audience member's ears. Many other magic tricks use this same principle of finding and hiding coins. Though you can purchase special magic coins, you can perform many tricks with regular coins such as quarters or nickels. Many tricks are done using quarters because of their larger size and weight. The larger an object you find or hide, the more impressive.

    Cards

    • A deck of cards serves as one of the most common magic trick objects. There are dozens of tricks you can perform with a normal, 52-card deck. Most of these tricks involve sleight of hand and some misdirection but this is true of many magic tricks. Because of their large size and bright color, it may be harder to hide cards than to hide other objects, such as quarters. Popular card tricks include the Card Varnish and Find the Joker. For easier magic tricks, you can use a deck of marked cards. Marked cards have small markings on their backs that differentiate them. In most cases, these markings are unnoticeable unless you know the trick.
